What to Do at Your Initial Consultation

When you go to your initial consultation, you should tell your lawyer what you want out of your case and any pertinent information such as if you have children, if you have a prenup, what your marriage was like and what your relationship with your spouse is like now. You’ll also need to provide information about you and your spouse’s assets and debts, so come prepared with recent pay stubs, tax returns, and W-2s.

Your lawyer should make you feel comfortable and heard. Professional lawyers will communicate what’s going on with your case on a regular basis and will normally get back to clients within 24 business hours and be completely transparent with them. They should want you to be involved and never shut you out.

At your meeting, don’t forget to ask your lawyer how long your case might take to finalize, their retainer and hourly rate, how much they predict it will cost, how they will bill you and different options for going about the process.

Though you may think you found a match in your first meeting, it’s a good idea to meet with two or three lawyers before deciding, just like it’s wise to get a second opinion when you go to a doctor. You never know: the second lawyer you meet with could suggest another way to go about your case that might work better for you.

Finally, trust your gut. Your lawyer should make you feel like you’re in good hands. After the meeting, you should come out feeling some relief, and not more stress. Even if the whole process is stressful in and of itself, your lawyer should be by your side and help comfort you during this time.

We Have Years of Experience In and Out of the Courtroom

Another reason you can feel confident in your decision to work with us is that we have the level of experience that you’re looking for. You want an attorney who knows the law, the court system, and the best strategies for securing positive outcomes for clients’ cases.

Our attorneys have decades of combined experience in family law. This experience includes investigations and discovery processes, negotiations, exposure to all the unexpected left turns a case could take and, of course, litigation.  Ruth Cate has earned an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale Hubbell, the highest rating awarded by that organization, and Attorney Rachel Brough has been named as a Martindale Hubbell Client Champion Gold.

Compassion and Respect Are the Foundation of Our Legal Practice

When you work with Cate & Brough, you will be working with experienced family and trial attorneys who have been recognized and praised for their efforts. But you will also be working with people who are spouses and parents themselves, who believe that compassion and respect are especially important in client representation.

When you work with us, we will truly listen to you, and will work hard to ensure you understand all of your options and what we believe to be the best strategy for your case. We never take a cookie-cutter approach, but instead treat you how we would want to be treated, and we customize our approach for each individual case. Throughout the process, if you need anything, our attorneys and paralegals will be available to answer questions about your case and help you feel comfortable in your choice to work with us.

We Are Not Afraid to Fight for You

At Cate & Brough, we take the time to figure out exactly what your case demands, and we consider all elements therein. While we do always prioritize mediation and working with other parties to reach a settlement that works for everyone out of court, we are not intimidated by the idea of going to court, and will fight for you in court if that’s what it takes to resolve your family law matter fairly. We never want you to have to compromise on the things that matter to you most.
